Our tour with take us to the scenic Thorsmork – Þórsmörk – the Valley of Thor. We will ride to the South Highlands of Iceland between the mountain glaciers of Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull with Mýrdalsjökul at the rear end of the valley. Þórsmörk has been named after Þór – Norse God of Thunder and the real heart of it is the area between Krossá, Þröngá and also Markarfljót rivers. We will have some amazing views, ride in birch forests, shrubs threw moss, and thriving vegetation in this beautiful valley.

Full of worderfull views tour around Peak Mountains Glacier – Tindfjallajökull. Tour offers a huge variance of landscapes, waterfalls, mountains, caves, lava fields.

On our riding trip we will take a close look and feel the power on the volcanos and nature. It will be magical to see the Icelandic mountains in the South from all sides and ride on very different landscapes and beautiful patches. Free herd will run with us all the way and also give the tour the dynamic and unique feeling.

Eight days (4 days option available) in the saddle, sleeping in a mountain cabins, eating Icelandic dinners and unforgettable experience. The tour is a real cross country based riding trip with a free heard of running horses. We are going to use trails which are not usually visit by ordinary visitors in Iceland.

There is going to be around 6 – 7 hours riding a day (around 30-40 km at day). Pick up at BSI bus station Reykjavik around 8:30am on the first day of our horseback riding tour and drop of to BSI around 7-8pm last evening.

Sleeping bag accommodation.

The tentative itinerary is as follows:

Day 1

Riding tour begin from our beautiful village and goes across lava fields and sand. We visit 2 nice waterfalls Tröllkonuhlaup and Þjófafoss and will be riding close to Búrfell mountain.

It will be amazing to pass beautiful lupin fields and stop for the night at Rjúpnavellir in Rangárþing Ytra it is a small and comfortable resort in South of Iceland. It is located only 9 km from the famous volcano – Hekla known as the “Gateway to hell” 1,491 m. is one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes.

Distance around 6 hour ride (30-35 km).

Day 2

Start our riding in the morning along low Icelandic Birkir tree forest also passing some farms and summer huts areas. Passing, Hrauntorfa lava field, Selsund (where during the earthquakes in 1912 a crack opened nearby and one side of the crack subsided all of 4m), and Suðurhraun and Pálsteinshraun lava from Hekla. We get closer and closer to Þríhyrningur mountain and see far to Eyjafjallajökull. After a good riding day we will arrive to Foss cabin an old deserted farm, where we can enjoy, amazing mountain landscape with waterfalls.

Distance around 6-7 hour ride (35 km).

Day 3

Firstly we leave Foss and ride South, passing the villages, Fljótshlið and field also over the old bridge and by mountain Stóri Dímon.  Enjoying a great mountain view and we will get closer to Tindfjallajökull glacier with highest peak Ýmir 1462m.

That night we stay at Stóra Mörk cabin. 

Distance 30km – 5 hours

DAY 4

Today we ride from the farm Stóra-Mörk and follow the river Markarfljót (Saga of Njáll), we will be riding on the soft ground covered by the ash of the Eyjaflallajökull volcano’s eruption in 2010. During our ride into the valley we cross several rivers and ride along the side of glacial river Krossá. We stay that night at the mountain hut Básar in Thórsmörk.

We will be riding that day in the Þórsmörk valley – beautiful nature reserve.

 Around 25 km – 5-6 hours.

Day 5

We will take a nice ride and discover some riding patches in the Þórsmörk valley. The  valley is framed by glaciers on three sides, Eyjafjallajökull, Tindafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The are is known for some most of the world unusual, stuning, natural landscapes.

 

 

Distance 20km – 4 hours

Day 6

Today we will visit of the “Elves Church”, a distinctive volcanic formation, followed by a visit of the enormous canyon Stakkholtsgjá, an unforgettable experience. Our day will be full of difrent views, from beautiful Thorsmork to villages site and in to the mountains. We will have a long riding day, all the way to Bólstaður cabin where we stay for the night.

About 45 – 50km – 7-8 hours

 Day 7

 That day we will ride on some of the most beautiful riding roads in Iceland. We will have a view on Einhyrningur (750m), rivers and mauntains on part of Fjallabak old ways – behind the mountains).

We will end the day at the wonderful cabin Hungurfit unique natural beauty, where we can enjoy amazing views. 

Long riding day 35km

Day 8

 Exciting and long distance day between Hungurfit and Hólaskógur. We will ride across big sand fields and lava on a very old riding patches made by horses, old national roads. There will many beautifull mountains on the way, some covered in snow and a lot green landscapes. We will walk down the famous Áfangagil hill and have huge view on another district mountain. We will stay last night at Hólaskogur cabin.  

 

Around 55km – 8 hours
